The fashion calendar says autumn starts in September. Your wardrobe probably disagrees. Before you buy anything new this season, it's worth spending two or three hours with what you already own. Most wardrobes contain at least one complete autumn outfit that hasn't been worn in two years because it's buried under things that don't work.

The three-pile method

Pull everything out. Not just the autumn pieces. Everything. Lay it on the bed or the floor. Then sort into three piles: things you've worn in the past twelve months, things you haven't worn but could see yourself wearing this season, and things you haven't worn and can't picture wearing. The third pile is the one to deal with first.

The third pile is usually larger than expected. It tends to contain impulse purchases, things that fit differently than they did in the shop, and pieces that were bought to go with something else that was then also never worn. Donating or selling these pieces before the season starts clears both physical and mental space.

Finding the outfits you already own

Once the culling is done, the second step is outfit-building from what remains. Take the pieces from pile one. The things you actually wear. And try combining them differently. Most people wear their clothes in the same combinations they discovered when they first bought them. A piece that's been worn only as a work top might work as a weekend layer. A skirt that's only been worn in summer might work in autumn with the right tights and boots.

This is the step that most wardrobe guides skip because it's less satisfying than shopping. But it's where the actual value is. A wardrobe of 40 pieces that you know how to combine is more useful than a wardrobe of 80 pieces where you only know how to wear 20 of them.

What to buy after the edit

After the edit, the gaps become obvious. Not 'I need more clothes' obvious, but 'I have three good autumn tops and no trousers that work with them' obvious. That specificity is what makes shopping useful rather than just addictive. Buy for the gaps, not for the feeling of newness.

The edit takes longer than the shopping. It also lasts longer. Most people who do a proper wardrobe edit in September find they need to buy less than they thought.
