Autumn colour advice tends to cluster around the same few combinations: camel and burgundy, navy and rust, olive and cream. Those combinations work, which is why they keep appearing. But they're also the combinations everyone else is wearing. This post covers some of the less obvious pairings that are worth trying this season, plus the logic behind why they work.

The warm-neutral anchor

Most successful autumn outfits are built around a warm neutral. A colour that reads as neither warm nor cool on its own but anchors the other colours in the outfit. Camel is the classic example, but warm grey, oatmeal, and a particular shade of off-white that leans slightly yellow all do the same job.

The anchor colour doesn't have to be the dominant colour in the outfit. It can be a trouser, a shoe, or a bag. Its job is to keep the other colours from fighting each other. An outfit with two strong autumn colours. Rust and burgundy, for example. Often needs a warm neutral somewhere to settle the combination down.

Combinations worth trying this season

Warm rust with deep forest green is a combination that's appearing in a lot of Japanese boutiques this autumn and works better in practice than it sounds. The key is keeping the rust in a muted, brown-leaning version rather than a bright orange-red. A rust knit with a forest green coat, or a rust skirt with a green top, both work with brown or tan shoes.

Dusty lilac with camel is a combination that sounds spring-like but reads as genuinely autumnal when the lilac is muted enough. A dusty lilac knit with camel trousers and brown ankle boots is a combination that's easy to build from pieces most wardrobes already contain.

Colours to be cautious about

Cobalt blue is getting a lot of press this autumn but is a difficult colour to wear in the muted, layered context of autumn dressing. It tends to dominate an outfit rather than work within it. If you want to wear it, keep it as a single accent piece against neutrals rather than building an outfit around it.

Bright terracotta has the same problem. The version that's appearing in press coverage is often more orange than the version that actually works in a wardrobe. Look for the rust or brick version rather than the orange version when shopping.

Colour combinations are easier to test than most people think. Lay the pieces next to each other in natural light before you commit to wearing them out. What works on a screen doesn't always work in fabric.
