A coat is the most expensive and most visible piece in an autumn wardrobe. It's also the piece most likely to be bought in a rush, in a shop that's too warm, while wearing the wrong shoes. This guide covers the questions worth asking before you buy, and the checks worth doing before you leave the shop.

Length relative to what you wear underneath

Coat length is the detail most people get wrong. The common mistake is buying a coat without thinking about what will be worn underneath it. A mid-length coat that ends at the knee looks intentional over trousers. Over a midi skirt, the same coat creates a hem collision that's difficult to resolve without changing either the coat or the skirt.

Before buying, think about the three or four outfits you wear most often in autumn. What length coat works with all of them? For most wardrobes, a coat that ends just above or just below the knee is the most versatile option because it works with both trousers and most skirt lengths.

Fabric weight for a Japanese autumn

Japan's autumn climate varies significantly by region. In Kyoto, October is mild enough that a heavy wool coat is too warm until November. A mid-weight wool or wool-blend coat. Something in the 400-500 gram range. Covers most of October comfortably and is still wearable in November with layers underneath.

Avoid unlined coats if you're buying for warmth rather than style. An unlined coat in a beautiful fabric is a good transitional piece for September but won't carry you through a cold November morning. Check the lining before you buy.

The versatility check

Before buying, do a quick mental check: does this coat work with the shoes I already own? A structured, formal coat looks wrong with chunky trainers. A relaxed, oversized coat looks wrong with pointed-toe heels. Neither combination is impossible, but both require the rest of the outfit to work harder to resolve the tension.

The most versatile coats are the ones that sit in the middle of the formal-casual spectrum. A classic wool coat in a neutral colour, cut with enough structure to look intentional but enough ease to wear over a chunky knit. That's a narrow brief, but it's the coat that gets worn the most.

The best coat purchase is the one you stop noticing because it works with everything. That's a harder brief than it sounds, but it's the right one to aim for.
